Everyone has been saying online and off that this is the nicest beach near Rome. You're wondering, is it worth the two-hour drive when I can be in Maccarese in an hour?
Answer: The beach is the nicest one I've been to on the mainland.
Drawbacks: It's expensive, (28 euro for an umbrella and two chairs, close to the water).

There are stairs that lead up into the town, which doesn't allow cars.

Pack your lunch for the beach or if you want to hike into town, try Gli Archi on via Ottaviano, 17.

Recommendations:

For 80 euro (without license) you can rent a 6-person motorized boat to tour the bay! Just a 5 minute walk south to the Embarcadero boat port, bar, restaurant, night club.

Upgrade to a suite at Hotel Porto Conte for a lot more room, mini-fridge, and sitting area!.

Tired of HB, FB, hotel food? 10 minutes walk is a supermarket that provides fresh produce, Sardinian meats and cheeses, fresh focaccia baked daily, olives, and all the beach gear you can want!

Rent a mountain bicycle from the hotel for very reasonable rates. Half-day for 12 euro/bike. Take the 11 km ride around the bay to Grotto di Nettuno. Hike down 656 steps to the entrance. Pay for the guided tour. Hike back up 656 steps. Stop for a sandwich and beer at the bluff-top bar. Bike 11 km back! Swim.

Splurge on an excellent dinner at a 5 star hotel restaurant. 10 minutes walk south, you'll find Il Caio. Men must wear long pants. Set menu for 40 euro. Amazing view. Tour the hotel! It's totally unforgettable but totally unaffordable.

Trip to Lago di Vico

This is a short hour-drive north of Rome. Great for a day trip. Take the kids for a huge playground. Look up www.labellavenere.it for exact directions to this public beach. La Bella Venere has accomodations and a restaurant, but better to pack a lunch and a big blanket. Water is clean and clear, beach is lava-y.

Noella and Paolo were great to us! Noella grows her own ingredients for cooking and canning, and can make dinner upon request. Breakfast is included, and Noella makes tartlettes with her own fruit as well as homemade jams and jellies. This would be a great place to go with multiple families, since all the rooms connect to a main dining room with fireplace, with an attached communal kitchen. Go winetasting at nearby Sesta di Sopra and buy a case of Brunello! Take the short jaunt into nearby Montalcino, or stop at any one of the restaurants or wineries along to way for great meals and great wine. Banfi gives tours during the week, and their winetasting and glass museum is open on the weekends. Aiole's price is right at 70 euro a night for a country inn in Tuscany.

1 liter Alcool Buongusto(95)
1 liter Simple Syrup (sugar water)

Zest 15 lemons, add to glass jar with 1 bottle Alcool. Seal tightly, store in dark place. Wait 30 days. Boil 1 liter water, stir in 4.5 cups sugar, let cool. Remove zest, add simple syrup. Wait 30 days.

Serve. Store in freezer.

AT HOME: Veal Saltimbocca

VEAL SALTIMBOCCA
8 veal cutlets
8 slices prosciutto
8 sage leaves
2 tbsp. butter, 2 tbsp. olive oil
¾ cup Marsala or dry white wine with 2tbsp. butter

Lay cutlets out flat, place a prosciutto slice on cutlet, place a sage leave on the prosciutto. Salt and pepper. Roll them up, secure with toothpick.
Heat butter and olive oil in large frying pan. Add veal rolls, turning as needed until cooked. Remove veal rolls to a serving plate.
In the remaining pan, deglaze with Marsala over medium-high heat until reduced. Add rest of butter to make the sauce. Pour over veal chops and serve.

AT HOME: Pasta Carbonara

13 oz. spaghetti
2 eggs, plus 2 egg yolks, ¼ cup cream and 2/3 cup parmesan
2tbsp. olive oil, plus 2tbsp. butter, 2 smashed garlic cloves
400g cubed pancetta

Cook the pasta all dente, or have fresh pasta ready to boil.
In a large serving dish, whisk together eggs, egg yolks, cream and parmesan. Set aside.
In a large frying pan, heat oil and butter and smashed garlic cloves. Add bacon. Cook until bacon is crisp. Discard garlic cloves when they turn golden.
Add drained spaghetti to frying pan, toss with bacon. Remove frying pan from heat, add contents to serving bowl, toss and serve pronto.

If you read '08 Lonely Planet, it will tell you that 47 members of the same family have worked here. I showed this review to the owner and his wife and they laughed at the absurdity! The gentleman who runs this restaurant is very kind. Luciano is from Rome, and met his Perugian wife Mariagrazia while she was at university in Rome studying agriculture. Four members of thier family (not 47) run this neat restaurant that has great food, reasonable prices for unique dishes and wine, and wonderful hospitality. If you make the trip to Perugia, DO NOT miss Ristorante Nana and tell them Olivia sent you for the chocolate mousse!

The quality of the rooms, the view of the lake, the remoteness, the attention to detail, speak English!, the restaurant with 7-course meals, the hospitality... and a during-the-week special of 59 euro can't be beat! Ask for Francesco Ricci. Or, the "glue" that keeps this place together: Fantastic Francesca, who lives in Perugia 20 minutes away and can give a lot of recommendations in the whole region. This agriturismo makes its own olive oil and jams, and has many local products available.

Some fresh Italian eggs will brighten up your Sunday morning. Eggs in Italy have yolks more yellow and flavorful than anywhere I've ever seen.

In a glass dish put 1/4 c. butter and melt in preheated oven at 350 degrees until fully melted. In a blender, blend 6 eggs, 1 cup milk, 4 heaping tablespoons of flour and sugar and then dashes of salt, Grand Marnier, lemon zest. Pour in hot dish in oven. Bake for 30 minutes.

Buy every fruit from the local market you see, even ones you don't recognize and slice them into a bowl. Add a little sugar and Grand Marnier. Serve dutch baby portions with fruit and a sprinkle of powdered sugar.

Also serve with pan fried sausages on the side.

Would you prefer to venture to an international wine shop for your Turkey Day wine? Trimani maintains a well-stocked wine shop about 40 meters from its wine bar, at Via Goito 20 (tel. 06-4469661), where an astonishing array of international wines are for sale. The shop is open from Monday to Friday 8:30am to 1:30pm and 3:30 to 8pm. It is short walk from the American embassy and has a very decent selection of international wines. From their French red burgundy section (or Bourgogne, made from the pinot noir grape), try one from Domain Faiveley (25 euro). Bright fruit (framboises, cerises) and hints of leather will light up your palate and you’ll understand the fuss behind the Sideway’s account of this varietal. Missing American wine? I saw a couple of Oregon pinot noirs that would be fun to try. Slightly less spendy, Trimbach has been making Alsatian whites since 1626 and their line of Riesling and Pinot Gris are always delicious with turkey. Take the bottle out of the fridge about 20 minutes before serving to really let the flavors warm up.
